Juan Salcedo Leads The 2022 Greater Houston Men’s Amateur Championship 

The Greater Houston City Amateur Championship began today at Gus Wortham Park Golf Course. The championship, hosted by Houston Golf Association, draws the top amateur golfers from across the Greater Houston area.

Juan Salcedo of The Woodlands, leads the field after the first round. After an early round bogey on the par-4 number 2, Salcedo finished the front nine at 2-under with birdies on holes six, seven and nine. He closed out the round with two birdies on the back nine, finishing with a 4-under, 66.

Following close behind sits Nikolas Martinez. After a front nine consisting of one eagle, one birdie and two bogeys for a 1-under, Martinez finished the round with birdies on holes 12 and 18. Finishing with a 3-under, 67. Martinez, a Cypress resident, is an alumnus of the First Tee – Greater Houston, a youth development program operated by the Houston Golf Association.

Five players sit tied for third, at 2-under including Garrett Drive of Crosby, Grant Doggett of Beach City, Alex Papayoanou of The Woodlands, John Parrott of Houston and Joe Nacewski of Spring.

The field of 144 will be cut to the low 40 scorers and ties after Saturday’s second round to set the stage for a 36-hole finale on Sunday. Keep up with the competition and follow the leaderboard through the weekend here.
