The Friends of Junior Golf Scholarship Program is another example of how the Houston Golf Association further reaches out into the community. Since 1996 HGA has funded $340,000 in college scholarships for deserving youngsters. This HGA-administered program encourages and promotes higher education goals for students meeting the following criteria:

  • Have a  definite financial need
  • Have participated in a junior golf program
  • Have demonstrated a high level of academic achievement during high school or college

New Scholarship Recipients 
Four (4) soon-to-graduate high school students have been awarded the 2006 HGA Friends of Junior Golf Scholarships for $1,250 per semester or a total of $2,500 per year. Golf ability was not a factor in awarding of scholarships.

2006 -- Chad Green, Booker T. Washington High School, who plans on majoring in Electrical Engineering at Texas A&M University

2006 -- Stefanie Avilez, Deer Park High School, who plans on majoring in Business Marketing at Texas A&M University

2006 -- Devin O'Rourke, Stratford High School, who plans on majoring in Communications at the University of Texas

2006 -- Camille Doykan, Memorial High School, who plans on majoring in Biology at Wellesley College


Current Scholarship Recipients 
Currently six (6) college students are on HGA Friends of Junior Golf Scholarships for $2,500 per semester or a total of $5,000 per year. Golf ability is not a factor in awarding of scholarships.

Katie Saalfeld of Tomball, TX (Texas A&M University)

Jordan Byers of Victoria, TX (University of Texas)

Christopher Johnson of Houston, TX (Texas A&M University)

2005 -- Jason Pettitt of Crosby, TX (University of Texas)

    Eligibility
Applicants must be enrolled as a full-time student (12 hours minimum/semester) in an accredited two or four-year college or university in the Fall 2005. 

Applicants have participated in any golf event sponsored by the HGA or have participated in ANY junior golf event AND the primary residency of the legal guardian is within the greater Houston boundaries. For more information visit the HGA Junior Golf Web Pages.
