Owen Joyner wins Houston amateur

Owen Joyner, a 52-year-old resident of Montgomery, shot 69-68-76-69 to win the Greater Houston Men's Amateur Championship at Memorial Park Golf Course. His 2-over-par 282 total was three shots better than runner-up Andy Cooper of The Woodlands, who carded 69-70-74-72.

David Pocknall of Katy finished third with 68-75-72-71--286, a stroke better than 2006 winner Seth Thornton of Houston, who scored 76-70-72-69.

Second-round leader James Dalthorp III of Houston finished fifth with 69-67-78-74--288. First-round leader Nick Kondra of West Columbia shot 67-73-76-74--290.

The 7,117-yard Memorial Park layout was changed to a par-70 with the short par-5 8th and 13th holes converted to par-4s.

Joyner, Cooper and Sandy Pierce of Houston shared the 54-hole lead at 3-over-par 213 after Sunday morning's first 18 holes. But Joyner grabbed the lead and held it, chipping in for birdie on the 72nd hole.

Defending champion Kip Guidry of Missouri City finished 15 shots off the pace at 297.

Nearly 500 amateurs from the Greater Houston Area competed in one of six qualifying tournaments to gain a position in the championship.
