SENIOR MEN'S AMATEUR

2009 Greater Houston Senior City Amateur Championship
Saturday-Sunday, October 10-11 @ Memorial Park Golf Course

Final Scores

Nelson rallies to win Senior Amateur title

Hunter Nelson of Houston shot 70-74 for an even-par 144 total and a one-stroke victory in the 2009 Greater Houston Senior Amateur Championship at Memorial Park. Doyle Sturman of Montgomery shot 76-72--148 to capture the Super Senior Division for golfers 65-and-over.

The damp and soggy conditions did not bode well for the first-round leaders in either division.

Michael Atnip of Kingwood, who opened with a 68 and held a 2-stroke lead going into Sunday's final round, shot 77.

Nelson overtook Atnip on the 72nd hole. Atnip had to settle for runner-up honors because he bogeyed his final two holes while Nelson strung together pars. Atnip finished at 1-over-par 144, followed by defending champion Robert McKinney, who shot 72-74--146. David Pocknall of Katy, runner-up in the Men's Amateur Championship, shot 72-75 to finish at 147.

Super Senior pacesetter Lance Sims of Missouri City, who claimed the first-round lead by shooting his age of 72, shot 82 to fall into fourth place. Sturman's score was the best of the day by three strokes.
